My Design Journey
When I first walked through the door of the original Edwardian home in Canterbury, it was clear this property had immense potential. The house, dating back to 1910, was rundown and in need of significant care, but I saw beyond the dilapidated exterior. I envisioned a space that would blend the elegance of its Edwardian origins with modern functionality creating a home that not only respected its heritage but also met the needs of a contemporary family.
The project involved a complete renovation and a bespoke extension, which was no small feat given the site’s limitations. The house sat on a relatively narrow block, and the original floor plan was compartmentalized and dark. My challenge was to maintain the charm and character of the Edwardian façade while optimizing the interior spaces for light, airflow, and open-plan living essential for the modern family lifestyle.
Navigating Site Challenges and Maximising Spatial Function
One of the most challenging aspects of the design was making the most of the limited space without compromising on function or aesthetic. The original house was cramped, with small, disconnected rooms. The renovation had to be careful, ensuring that while the new spaces were expansive and modern, they still felt like a natural extension of the original structure.
I focused on creating a seamless flow from the interior to the outdoor spaces, something that was sorely lacking in the original home. By incorporating floor-to-ceiling glass doors and large windows, I was able to flood the living areas with natural light, making the home feel more expansive and open. The new family living area is spacious yet intimate, offering both functionality for everyday family life and flexibility for entertaining.
The spatial layout was another important consideration. I wanted each room to serve a specific purpose while maintaining a sense of openness. The addition of a light-filled, open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area became the heart of the home, with plenty of room for the family to gather. The kitchen itself, equipped with high-end appliances, is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, anchored by Carrara marble benchtops that tie in with the home’s classic style.
Thoughtful Integration of Old and New
From the outset, my goal was to create a harmonious blend of old and new. The Edwardian elements, such as high ceilings, ornate detailing, and wide timber floors, were carefully preserved and restored, while the modern addition was designed to be both bold and respectful of its surroundings. The sleek, contemporary features such as the marble surfaces, integrated appliances, and clean lines contrast beautifully with the home’s period details.
I made sure to retain key design characteristics that define Edwardian architecture, such as the grand entry hall and the master bedroom’s original fireplace, while enhancing the overall experience with modern amenities. This balance between period charm and modern convenience is what truly elevates the design.
Impressive Functionality and Flow
Spatial function was at the core of the design. The home’s layout maximizes usability while ensuring that every area feels interconnected. I integrated clever storage solutions throughout the design, from custom cabinetry to hidden nooks, to minimize clutter and maximize the liveable space.
The transition between indoor and outdoor spaces was another priority. The new covered alfresco area, which leads to a private garden and gas/solar-heated pool, is perfect for entertaining or unwinding. This outdoor space is framed by lush landscaping, ensuring privacy and a serene environment.
Hydronic heating and refrigerated cooling were also incorporated to provide year-round comfort, while the home’s storage capacity ensures the family has enough room to stay organized. Every inch of the home was thoughtfully designed to serve the needs of the modern family while respecting the past.
