When homeowners Jon and Cecily reached out to Anabode Design and Drafting, they were seeking to transform their dated 1950s weatherboard home into a modern, spacious, and functional residence. Situated in the leafy Melbourne Eastern Suburb of Blackburn North, within the beautiful Whitehorse Municipality, the original home no longer met the needs of their growing family of four. With just three bedrooms, one bathroom, and a poorly utilised living and dining space, the property lacked both kerb appeal and the comfort essential for contemporary family life.
The couple’s vision was clear: to design a forever home that combined character with modern functionality. Anabode Design and Drafting, specialists in residential design and drafting across Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, worked closely with Jon and Cecily to create a new master plan tailored to their current lifestyle and future needs.
The major renovation and house extension project involved stripping the home back to its frame, allowing for a complete redesign that gave the impression of a brand-new build rather than a simple addition. The result was a spacious, single-storey weatherboard home comprising four bedrooms—including a luxurious master suite and a guest room—two full bathrooms, and a powder room.
One of the highlights of the new design is the thoughtful zoning of private and communal spaces. The layout offers the children their own dedicated zones, while still promoting family interaction through shared living spaces. A large lock-up garage improves security and practicality, and the seamless flow from the living and rumpus areas to the alfresco lounge makes the home ideal for both entertaining and relaxation.
Natural light played a central role in the design, creating bright, welcoming interiors that significantly enhance the home’s liveability. A standout architectural feature is the full-glass roof window above the master suite’s shower—providing a striking view of the sky and reflecting Jon and Cecily’s attention to detail and love of unique design.
The project was brought to life by Eltcon, with a construction budget between $700,000 and $800,000, and was completed in 2021. Eltcon worked hand-in-hand with both the homeowners and Anabode Design and Drafting to ensure that the vision was realised, the budget was maintained, and the build met the highest standards of craftsmanship.
