Project Overview
This project transformed a typical 1960s clinker brick home in Mitcham into a spacious family residence designed to grow with its owners for decades to come.
When George and Malise purchased the property, they recognised its potential as the place where they would establish their family. While the existing home provided a solid foundation, its original layout of three bedrooms and one bathroom was becoming increasingly restrictive. The living areas were disconnected, there was limited space for entertaining, and the home lacked the flexibility needed to support a young and growing family.
Their initial vision was to simply create more space, but through the design process we explored how the home could work harder for them both now and into the future. Rather than focusing solely on increasing the size of the house, we developed a practical and cost-effective solution that prioritised functionality, adaptability, and long-term value. By carefully considering how the family would live over the next 10 to 20 years, we were able to create a home that could evolve with changing needs, reducing the likelihood of future renovations or the need to move.
The design seamlessly integrates a substantial rear extension with the original clinker brick home, maintaining its character while introducing light-filled and functional living spaces. A generous open-plan family room now forms the heart of the home, flowing effortlessly to a covered alfresco deck that encourages year-round indoor-outdoor living and entertaining.
The extension also includes a dedicated rumpus room, providing children with their own space to play and grow while offering flexibility as the family matures. Two additional bedrooms and a new family bathroom significantly improve the home’s functionality, comfortably accommodating the family’s future needs. Careful planning ensured the new addition feels like a natural continuation of the original house rather than an obvious extension.
By effectively doubling the home’s floor area, the renovation has completely redefined the way the family lives. Every space has been designed with purpose, balancing practicality with comfort while maximising the value of the existing home. The result is a timeless, functional, and welcoming residence that allows George and Malise to remain in the neighbourhood they love, with a home that is truly designed to support their family for many years to come.
