When it comes to designing your dream home, sometimes the most unique features become the defining elements of the entire space. For Scott and Sharon Canobie, that feature was their wine cellar—and it came before anything else. Even before the foundations were laid, they had already decided that the wine cellar would take pride of place in their new home. This was a home that would be built from the ground up, replacing an old weatherboard house in Blackburn North, with a design that reflected their personality and lifestyle.
In this article, I’ll walk you through the journey of how Anabode Design and Drafting worked with the Canobie’s to create their dream home, from demolition to design, with a special focus on how the wine cellar became the heartbeat of the entire home.
The Idea: A Wine Cellar Before a House
It all started with a picture. Scott and Sharon had already decided that their new home would be more than just a place to live it would be an extension of their passions. When Sharon found an image of a glass-walled wine cellar in a magazine, it immediately captivated them. They loved the idea of having a wine cellar right in the heart of their home. And so, even before the old weatherboard house was demolished in Blackburn North, the Canobie’s knew one thing for sure: the wine cellar would be the centrepiece.
“We wanted it from day one,” Scott recalls. “Sharon found the picture, and we thought, ‘that will look cool, something different in the hallway.’”
The concept was clear. But to make it a reality, they needed someone who could incorporate this feature into the overall home design. That’s where Anabode Design and Drafting came in.
Designing the Wine Cellar: The Heart of the Home
For Scott and Sharon, the wine cellar wasn’t just about storing bottles of wine; it became the visual centrepiece of their home. The wine cellar was designed to be the focal point, immediately visible as you enter through the front door. The design features an oblong glass trapdoor framed in burnished steel edges, offering a direct view into the cellar below. The door opens on hydraulics, controlled by a simple switch on the wall making it both a striking and functional design.
As the designer behind the project, I was tasked with ensuring that the wine cellar worked within the overall vision for their home. We worked closely together to ensure that the cellar wouldn’t just be a beautiful feature but an essential part of their lifestyle.
“We designed the entrance so there was enough space for the cellar without compromising the overall functionality of the entryway,” I explained. “The foyer is relatively standard, but the formal aspect of the cellar creates an immediate visual interest as soon as you walk in.”
Incorporating the cellar in the entryway not only brought a sense of drama to the space, but it also became a fantastic conversation starter an intriguing focal point for anyone who enters the home.
Designing a Whole New Home: From Demolition to Dream Design
Before Scott and Sharon could enjoy their wine cellar and the new design, we had to knock down the old weatherboard house in Blackburn North. This step was essential for creating a space that truly reflected their needs and desires. Working closely with Scott and Sharon, I designed a modern home that would not only feature the stunning cellar but would also accommodate their growing family and lifestyle.
From the very beginning, we focused on creating a home that was both functional and visually appealing. The design incorporated open-plan living, sustainable features, and bespoke storage solutions. The house was designed to integrate seamlessly with its surroundings while standing as a striking example of contemporary architecture.
After the demolition, the process of designing the new home was focused on creating functional spaces that matched Scott and Sharon’s lifestyle. Every decision from drafting building plans to drafting house design was carefully considered to ensure the home met the family’s needs.
Building the Wine Cellar: Crafting a Functional Feature
The wine cellar wasn’t just a decorative feature it had to be practical, durable, and capable of growing with Scott’s ever-expanding collection. We worked closely with the team at Spiral Cellars to design a cellar that would fit perfectly within the new home’s architecture. The cellar was built 2 metres deep, dug into the earth to take advantage of the surrounding soil’s ability to regulate temperature naturally.
“The cellar is designed to maintain a constant temperature, even in the heat of Melbourne’s summers,” I explained to Scott and Sharon. “Thanks to the earth’s natural insulation, no external cooling systems are necessary.”
This use of natural temperature regulation is not only energy-efficient but also environmentally friendly, demonstrating how sustainable building design can be integrated into a home. And as much as I love the modern design of the entire home, this wine cellar truly stands out as one of the most memorable elements.
Challenges of Designing a Wine Cellar
While the concept was clear, turning it into a reality presented some challenges. Many builders were hesitant to take on the project due to the complexity of installing a wine cellar within the existing space. It wasn’t simply about installing a few wine racks; we had to integrate the cellar into the home’s foundations, requiring careful planning and expertise.
“A couple of builders didn’t know how to do it,” Scott explains. “Others charged a significant margin because of the complexity. But we eventually found a builder who was up for the challenge.”
The process involved digging out the space, placing reinforcing materials, and ensuring the installation of the racks was done properly. It wasn’t an easy task, but it was well worth the effort. The result? A wine cellar that’s not only functional but also a beautiful feature that complements the overall design of the home.
The Finished Product: A Family-Friendly Wine Cellar
Now that the wine cellar and the rest of the house are complete, Scott and Sharon have fully embraced their new space. The cellar currently holds 500 bottles, mostly Australian reds like Shiraz, with Scott continuing to build his collection for the future. The cellar can hold up to 1,100 bottles, so there’s plenty of room for expansion.
“I’m building up my collection for the long term,” Scott says. “Some of the wine is still young, but I’ve got some bottles that are ready to drink now.”
The Canobie’s also made sure the space was family-friendly. With three young sons, safety was a top priority. To prevent the kids from accessing the cellar without supervision, we designed a high-mounted kill switch that only the adults can reach.
“The boys know it’s off-limits unless we’re with them,” Scott says. “We’ve made sure they can’t get in there unsupervised.”
Integrating Unique Features into Your Home Design
Scott’s wine cellar is just one example of how custom design and drafting can elevate your home and reflect your lifestyle. If you’re considering incorporating unique features into your own home, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Prioritise Functionality
While the aesthetics of a feature like a wine cellar are important, functionality is key. Consider the storage capacity, temperature control, and how the feature fits into the overall flow of your home.
Consider Safety
For features that involve potential risks, such as a wine cellar with access restrictions for children, safety should always be a priority. Work with your designer to incorporate features like high-mounted switches, safety locks, and other precautions.
Create a Visual Focal Point
A wine cellar can be more than just a storage space—it can become the visual centre of your home. Think about how it can draw the eye and serve as a conversation starter.
